Covered Bridge Wins Medals in 2009 Senior Olympics
"It is scientifically impossible for the butterfly to fly, but no one told the butterfly." So it is with our Senior Olympics teams. Fifteen condos in Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean Counties, many with younger residents, participate every summer in the Senior Olympics games. This past year, Covered Bridge fielded teams in 10 of the 15 events - ping pong, singles and doubles, basketball, 8 ball, 9 ball and straight pool, men's tennis doubles, shuffleboard, bowling and bocce~ (We have not been fielding teams in swimming, golf, race-walking, ladies' tennis or mixed tennis doubles). The pool table events were held here, while otbers were hosted by area condos and community centers.
33 Covered Bridge players participated, some in more than one event. We were very successful, with wins in 6 events. This was the most in recent years, including four gold medals in 8 ball, basketball and ping-pong singles and doubles. Eighteen players
contributed to winning teams. Multiple medals were earned by Murray Markinson, Paul Ferrigno, Ray Fiori, Charles Deng, John Zwong, Ilya Lioznyansky, Chet Mitchell, Nat Esaqui and Sid Leveson.
Medals were presented by Senior Olympics Athletic Director Mike Moskowitz on November 4th. He organized our teams with support from team captains Ray Fiori and Murray Markinson, pool; Ron Bara, ping-pong; Chet Mitchell and Irwin Sandler, tennis; Mike Moskowitz, basketball; Bob Mairana, bowling; Chet Mitchell, bocce; and Sy Smolen, shuffleboard. Thanks to all for their efforts.
Everyone is encouraged to participate in the 2010 Senior Olympics next June and July. There is plenty of time to brush up on your skills or just play for your entertainment. All of these activities are available regularly for Covered Bridge residents. If you are unable to participate, come and root for our teams.
